On June 15th, Cadance Academy proudly presents Aladdin, a vibrant production inspired by the classic Persian folktale from the renowned collection One Thousand and One Nights, compiled by Omar Khayyam.
Gaea Jess, Director of Cadance Academy, shares her excitement:
“Aladdin is a dazzling kaleidoscope of colours, evoking the lively atmosphere of a Middle Eastern market bursting with rich flavours. Join Aladdin on a captivating journey filled with adventure, romance, and timeless lessons. This magical carpet ride is packed with twists and turns, offering something truly special for everyone in the audience.”
Odin Jess-Wegleitner, a talented dancer and assistant teacher known for his performances in Cadance’s Nutcracker over the past two years, takes on the lead role of Aladdin. Odin had this to say about dancing the lead as Aladdin:
“Playing Aladdin has pushed my athleticism and agility to the limit. The choreography is intense, truly testing my endurance throughout the entire production. Spoiler alert for the audience: get ready, because the action is coming right at you!”
Jasmine Imlay-Price, who recently passed her advanced ballet exam and has charmed audiences as Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy, stars as Princess Jasmine. Claire Asprey, another skilled dancer and assistant teacher celebrated for her role as Olaf in last year’s Frozen, brings the Genie to life.
Villainous Jafar is portrayed by Ward McDonald, a veteran performer with nearly a decade of experience at Cadance, including the role of Drosselmeyer. Ward reflects on his role as Jafar:
“Everyone loves a good villain. The more evil we become, the better our heroes look. Enjoy the show and I hope you find me completely foul and detestable. ”
Odin and Jasmine will share a beautiful pas de deux to the iconic song “A Whole New World.” Jasmine comments on this special moment:
“Odin and I have been dancing partners since childhood, and with my graduation this year, this performance will be one to remember.”
The show features a diverse soundtrack that complements a wide range of dance styles — ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and acro — all inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Middle East. With 144 dancers aged 3 to adult rehearsing tirelessly, this production promises to be a spectacular display of talent. Adding to the magic, Cadance’s expert tech team will enhance the performance with creative lighting effects.
Laila North, a beloved longtime teacher and choreographer, encourages everyone to attend:
“Aladdin is a must-see for anyone who loves exceptional dancing, acting, and music. We look forward to seeing you there!”
