It can be heartbreaking to see your child upset when they don’t get the role they hoped for. During these moments, staying calm and having an open conversation can make a big difference. Help your child focus on positives and how they can shine in their assigned part.

Please see this as a valuable learning experience. Avoid placing blame on outside factors. Disappointment is natural in performing arts and helps build resilience and strengthen character.

I am always available if you or your child want to talk. Many talented dancers could fit a role, and making these decisions is never easy, especially when only one spot is available.

Auditioning for Cadance Academy’s Nutcracker is an exciting milestone, especially as we celebrate 20 years of this cherished tradition! But remember, auditioning is just the start of the journey. Your progress in class, attitude, and teamwork all play a big role in casting decisions.

Every time you step into class, practice combinations, and embrace corrections, you move closer to being audition-ready. Attendance is crucial, missing classes or rehearsals makes it harder to improve and reflects your commitment. Even if injured, observing can still teach you a lot. Consistent effort sharpens your technique, acting, and expressiveness, key qualities that bring Nutcracker characters to life. It’s not just about dancing well; it’s about telling the story through movement and emotion.

How you behave in class matters just as much. Respect for teachers and fellow dancers, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn show you’re ready for new challenges. We also value teamwork because Nutcracker is a story told by many dancers who must work together smoothly on stage.

A Special Note for Parents

Casting is a careful process. We consider height and how dancers look together because some roles require groups that blend visually. This is especially important for pas de deux or partnering, where physical compatibility helps make challenging steps possible and choreography flow smoothly.

Many dancers audition for the same roles, and not everyone gets their first choice. Sometimes you'll be offered a different role, and that’s okay! Those parts can surprise you and become your favorites or prepare you for bigger challenges later on. It’s great to dream big but also remember that every part matters and contributes to the magic of the show.

The Nutcracker is a classic production performed every year, so it’s common for dancers to reprise roles multiple times. Many welcome this opportunity to deepen their connection and bring new levels of refinement and joy each season. Revisiting a role allows you to discover fresh ways to make it your own.

If you desire a new role each year but find yourself cast in the same part, try viewing it as a chance to grow. Your experience gives you a foundation to explore new dimensions and bring greater depth to the character. This continuity can be a powerful tool for your development.

Setting goals with clear action steps is helpful. For example, if you want the role of Clara, think about skills you need to develop, technique, acting ability, partnering skills, and being a strong role model.

If you are cast in a part you didn’t expect or didn’t list on your form, it’s normal to feel disappointed at first. But accepting the role with a positive attitude and commitment shows integrity and dedication. Every role is important to making the show successful.

Choosing who gets each part is never easy. We spend time considering how everyone fits into the story and how parts work together as a whole. Every role creates the unique charm of The Nutcracker.

If you don’t get the role you wanted this year, remember there’s always next time. Keep working hard in class, enjoy dance, and keep dreaming big. The Nutcracker wouldn’t be the same without every dancer who brings it to life.

Whether this is your first audition or your tenth, know this production is about community, growth, and sharing a timeless story through dance. We can’t wait to see you shine!
