Junior Class Descriptions
Full Year Dance Courses
Students are requested to register in the appropriate age group and dance form. Placement will be at the discretion of the teacher.
Ballet Classes
Are a series of building blocks, starting with the Tiny Tots and working up to Senior Level. Cadance starts the younger students with R.A.D. (Royal Academy of Dance) ballet syllabus graduating to the C.D.T.A. (Canadian Dance Teachers Association) syllabus when they are old enough to take exams . Students taking ballet will develop poise, balance, grace, good spatial skills, co-ordination, self-confidence and an awareness of one’s body and one’s personal potential etc.
Moms & Tots (1/2 hr ~ 6 week course)
Children aged 2-3 yrs and a parent. Includes rhythmic play and creative movement. Great ways for a child to first explore the world of dance in a safe environment.
Attire required: something they can move freely in.
Tiny Tots (1/2 hr.)
A dance class geared towards four-year olds. Students learn “incidentally” through stories, creative dance and instruction. There is no set syllabus for this class. It is a pre-requisite for Pre-Primary.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers or pink gymnastic slippers, long hair tied up.
Boys: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Pre-Primary (3/4 hr)
First year of RAD syllabus for five-year olds, incorporating ballet technique and terminology. Learn set exercises to set music as well as some creative dance.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Boys: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Primary (1 hr)
An RAD syllabus for 6+ year olds continuing from Pre-Primary.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers or pink gymnastic slippers, long hair tied up.
Boys: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 1 RAD (1hr)
A pre-exam class for 7+ year olds continuing from the Primary level with an introduction to barre work and use of arms (no skirt).
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Boys: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 1 CDTA (1hr)
An introduction to CDTA syllabus with more emphasis on barre work, enchainment and across the floor exercises. For students 8+ years that have completed Grade 1 RAD, the first level in which ballet exams are offered.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers or pink gymnastic slippers, long hair tied up.
Boys: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 2 CDTA (1 ¼ hrs)
For students who have completed Grade 1 CDTA (9+ years). This grade introduces the balletic polka, arabesque etc. requiring a 1-¼ hour class.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Boys: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 3 CDTA (1 ¼ hrs)
Building on the Grade 2 CDTA syllabus this grade is for 10+ year olds. The syllabus becomes more demanding therefore it is recommended that students attend at least 2 classes a week.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers or pink gymnastic slippers, long hair tied up.
Males: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 4 CDTA (1 ¼ hrs)
This is the first level of the CDTA senior syllabus including pre-pointe work (11+ years old). Two years at this level and two classes a week are recommended.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Males: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 5 CDTA (1 ¼ hrs)
A continuation from grade 4 syllabus with an introduction to pointe work. (13+ year olds). At least 2 years and two classes a week are recommended for this level.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers or pink gymnastic slippers, long hair tied up.
Males: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Grade 6 CDTA (1 ¼ hrs)
A continuation from Grade 5 with more emphasis on pointe and centre work (15+ year olds). Two years and two classes a week are recommended for this grade. Passing the Grade 6 exam qualifies students to join the CDTA as an Affiliate member. This is the first step to becoming a dance teacher.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Males: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Senior Level Ballet (1 ¼ hrs)
For the mature student who has completed Grade 6. This grade emphasizes different variety of exercises each week. There is no set syllabus for this class.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers or pink gymnastic slippers, long hair tied up.

Ballet Master Class (1 ¼ hrs)
For the serious ballet students from grades 5, 6 and Senior Level who wish to become a stronger dancer and improve all aspects of their ballet training.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Males: white short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants (no jeans), black ballet slippers or black gymnastics slippers.
Creative Dance (included in younger ballet and jazz classes)
Guides children in development of basic body & postural awareness, strength, co-ordination & musicality all within a creative & imaginative setting.
Yoga Junior 1 (8 week course ~ 5-7 yrs)
This class is a fantastic way to introduce your children to yoga! Each class includes sharing time, breathing and warm up, then moves into games around poses, and ends with relaxation.
Attire required: Pale pink or white tights, long-sleeved bodysuit (any colour), short circular skirt, pink ballet slippers, long hair tied up.
Males: Boys & Girls are to wear something they can move comfortably in.
Yoga Junior 2 (8 week course ~ 8-12 yrs)
Taking the young yogi to the next level by starting to introduce more advanced poses. Even though this class will be a more structured yoga class there will still be lots of room for yoga games.
Attired required: Boys & Girls are to wear something they can move comfortably in.
After School Yoga (8 week course ~ 13 + yrs)
Yoga is an ideal way for a teen to find inner calm and to learn how to focus. Not only does yoga train the mind but it also challenges the body in many new and fun ways.
Modern Classes
Based on the body's response to gravity, modern uses the torso and head to guide movement. Basic principles of fall/rebound are explored in seated, standing and traveling work. Personal style and freedom to explore a dynamic range of movement are strongly encouraged. Improvisation is also explored to discover the dancer’s true movement. Modern is a great class for students that want to move in a more grounded way. Some ballet training is strongly recommended.
Modern Intro (10+ yrs)
This is a great introduction to the basics of modern. The challenge in this class will be learning how to fall and rebound. Students will also learn many improvisational games as well as work on their technique. Balance will also be a main component of this class.
Attired required: dark colored bodysuit, black tights (footless) or jazz pants and hair tight up if long.
Males: short sleeved t-shirt, shorts or stretchy pants or jogging pants. No footwear is required for this class.
Modern 1 (12+ yrs)
Dancer’s will be challenged to take more risks in this class. Emphasis will be on building muscular strength and improving the cardiovascular system. There will be a lot of dynamic traveling across the floor. Students will continue to explore improvisation to bring their dancing to a new level.
Modern 2 (14+ yrs)
This class is similar to “Modern 1” but will move faster. Students should have a strong dance background and be ready to work up a sweat in this class. Contact improvisation will be introduced in this class. Students must have approval from the Director or Assistant Director, or will be placed in appropriate level after the first class.
Jazz Classes
The key elements of jazz dance are syncopation, individual style, and improvisation. Syncopation is what gives jazz its edge and excitement. Changes happen often and are unexpected. Connection with the jazz music is another important aspect of jazz dance. Jazz music is what puts the soul into jazz dancing.
Pre-Jazz 1 (4 – 5 yrs)
Keeping a connection to the history of jazz dance, the Cadance children's jazz program places strong emphasis on common dance techniques and skills within the jazz context along with vernacular (social) dance steps from the early days of jazz dance. Emphasis is placed on joy of dance and accuracy of movement in an encouraging and non-threatening atmosphere.
Attired required: bodysuit or tight fitting top, tights or jazz pants, black gymnastics slippers or jazz shoes, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, black gymnastic slippers or jazz shoes.
Pre-Jazz 2 (6-7 yrs.)

Also a beginner level class, moves faster than pre-jazz, but has first year students as well.

Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, black gymnastic slippers or jazz shoes.
Jazz “B” (9-10 yrs)
Continuation from Jazz “A”, still considered a junior or beginner level.
Attired required: bodysuit or tight fitting top, tights or jazz pants, black gymnastics slippers or jazz shoes, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, black gymnastic slippers or jazz shoes.
Jazz “C” (10-11 yrs)
A step up from the junior levels, a faster pace for students with previous dance experience who are familiar with the simpler steps, introduction to jazz slides, progressions, more advanced jumps and across the floor combos.
Attire required: bodysuit or tight fitting top, tights or jazz pants, black gymnastics slippers or jazz shoes, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, black gymnastic slippers or jazz shoes.
Jazz 1 (12-13 yrs)
Continuation from Jazz “C”, stronger technique encouraged, students participate in creating their own choreography.
Attired required: bodysuit or tight fitting top, tights or jazz pants, black gymnastics slippers or jazz shoes, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, black gymnastic slippers or jazz shoes.
Jazz 2 (14+ yrs)
For the experienced dancer who has basic technique skills, more complicated combos introduced, single and double turns.
Attire required: bodysuit or tight fitting top, tights or jazz pants, black gymnastics slippers or jazz shoes, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, black gymnastic slippers or jazz shoes.
Jazz 3 (16+ yrs)
FAST! For advanced students. Students must have approval from the Director or Assistant Director, or will be placed in appropriate level after the first class.
Attired required: bodysuit or tight fitting top, tights or jazz pants, black gymnastics slippers or jazz shoes, hair tied up if long.
Males: short sleeved t-shirt, dark colored shorts or jazz pants or jogging pants, jazz shoes or jazz runners.
Funk / Hip-Hop
Using funk and popular dance music, this class explores a fusion of hip-hop, jazz and popular dance with each teacher exploring a different slant to the funk groove. Guaranteed to make you sweat, certain to groove you up.
Attire required: fitted top, jazz pants, indoor sneakers or jazz runners, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, indoor sneakers or jazz runners.
Funk / Hip-Hop 1 (10+yrs)
A beginner level class designed to find your “inner groove”.
Attired required: fitted top, jazz pants, indoor sneakers or jazz runners, hair tied up if long.
Males: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, indoor sneakers or jazz runners.
Funk / Breakin' 2 (12+ yrs)
Will incorporate Funk and Breakin’ for an action packed class! Hit the floor and learn this street dance foundation. A physical class that challenges students to support themselves on hands and body parts other than their feet. Indoor sneakers are required, and kneepads and wrist supports are recommended.
Attire required: fitted top, jazz pants, indoor sneakers or jazz runners, hair tied up if long.
Boys: short sleeved t-shirt, jazz pants or jogging pants, indoor sneakers or jazz runners.
Funk / Hip Hop 3 (14+ yrs)
At this level, students should have a strong internal groove. Students are encouraged to bring out their own personal style. This class will move quickly and challenge the dancer in many different ways.
